Retail’s Biggest Lighting Challenges


All brick-and-mortar retailers are challenged with brand image, online shopping, keeping stores fresh looking, and profitability. Retail environments need to offer a superior shopping experience that is interactive, interesting, and engaging. Good lighting design is critical to supporting that goal.

How you present products is a direct extension of your brand.  If you have a dark, poorly-lit store it will affect the overall customer experience.  A customer that is excited about their shopping experience will stay longer and spend more money.  Not only will these customers be more likely to return but enjoy coming back.  

With bright lights burning on average of 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, lighting energy represents a significant cost for retailers. LEDs typically use 10-20% of the energy that a normal incandescent light uses. And with ever-increasing pressure to prove their sustainability credentials, store owners are keen to get their consumption down.

Color quality is one of the most important parts of a retail setting.  Now that energy-hungry halogen lamps are being phased out, LEDs have risen to the challenge. LED products can now produce even cleaner and more vivid colors than with traditional sources.  Certain lights can literally improve the product’s appearance.

Reducing maintenance is huge for store managers. With heavy use of short-lived halogen lamps, lighting maintenance is a daily task for many retailers.   The extreme longevity of LEDs, which can last up to 50,000 hours, ensures less maintenance cost, less usage of bulbs, and less waste for the environment.  

The lighting industry is constantly coming out with new cutting-edge technology, so it is important to stay up to speed. Controls and dimmers have given retailers the opportunity to help cut back on energy usage, as well. It is crucial to look ahead to future developments to make sure that your system is fit for the future.  

Despite the fact that initial costs of LED bulbs are higher than the cost of incandescent or halogen lightings, the long-term savings certainly pay off while contributing to a better environment and a brighter store.
