Christmas Lights Safety - Check Your List Twice
While the holidays are filled with gifts, decorations, and lights, Santa shouldn’t be the only one checking his list twice. It’s the most wonderful time of year! Taking the right precautions will help eliminate any risk with your lights and decorations, so you can keep the holidays jolly and bright.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, two-thirds of the fires related to holiday fires (160 homes) are due to electrical malfunctions and create $9 million dollars of damage.
Here are some helpful tips when choosing your lights:
LEDs have non-glass durable lenses.
Typical incandescent bulbs create a high amount of heat, while LEDs are a cool alternative which will give you a greater energy efficiency.
Inspect your electrical decorations for cracks and damages, loose wires, and connections that will shock or spark.
Ditch the old strands that do not have fused plugs.
Get a ground fault interrupter outlet to avoid shocks when your outdoor lights come in contact with water and debris.
Here is what you need to avoid:
Always use lights that are approved and tested by a nationally recognized laboratory.
Never connect three strands of lights in a row.
Avoid mounting or placement that would damage cords
Turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before leaving and going to sleep.
Avoid using candles when possible.
After the new year, store your lights in a well-sealed plastic container.
